Whoever is Going Through It Right Now
I am so glad you are here.
To You, going through something big in your life, or maybe even too many things all at once to process.
To You, that feels like your whole life is out of sorts.
To You who knows your life can be better.
To whoever is feeling burned out from everything on their plates right now, and is wondering when you get a break.
To whoever has the passion, the ambition, the drive towards excellence, the mission they’re tirelessly pursuing, but without the capacity to keep up.
I want you to know a few things:
You’re Not Being Dramatic or Lazy
I want you to know how sorry I am. I feel your stress, and your pain because I’ve been there many times, and I’ve talked to hundreds of others who have or are there right now too. Of course, you’re overwhelmed with everything on your plate, and happening in your life and in the world! Of course, you have limited capacity with everything that is expected of us today. I know that feeling that nothing you do is enough. I know it feels like you can’t catch a break, and it’s exhausting. Just when you think you’ve made headway in one facet of life, here comes a stressor from another. Your kid is sick at home, that person you thought you clicked with disappointed you, there’s another global crisis or a project or reorg at work you just don’t have the capacity for, that throws your whole life out of balance - and JUST when you’ve managed to come up for air. You are human, and you’re not alone in this.
It’s Hard Work and There Aren’t Band-Aids
Starting coaching can provide immediate relief. Just having a neutral, safe forum to organize your thoughts and feelings relieves some pressure rather immediately. But I don’t want to paint an unrealistic picture for anyone that thinks this work is mostly fun, or short-term. The work to find sound well-being is hard. Growth is hard, and it’s ongoing. It’s not all going to get addressed in a few sessions, or even in a few months necessarily. There will be steps forward, aha moments, as well as steps back. You may even want to quit (this typically happens just as you’re onto something big). Being honest with ourselves is hard. You’re excavating your thoughts, and beliefs about how we view and treat our bodies, and our relationships with others - all of this in one way or another gets unearthed in the coaching process, which can cause a lot of turmoil at first, but eventually, it clears out; it clears space, and you progress! When I went through my own coaching training, I felt like someone had turned up the volume on all my feelings, my thoughts, and on everyone around me. I was hyper-aware and had so many unanswered questions. I felt like a raw nerve walking around in the world. That is normal. Then, there are the habits to learn and unlearn which take time (think about learning how to play an instrument or studying for the GMAT - this is a process), so don’t get discouraged.
Things Feel Unsustainable, Because They Are
Are there too few hours in a day? Yes. Do companies (and the world for that matter) expect too much from us? Yes. Are we under tremendous pressure, a lot of which is out of our control? Yep. But consider the costs of not doing anything different, without taking control of what we can. Imagine continuing on as they are. I’ve worked with a lot of coaches. I have one now whom I love, and I hired her in the midst of personal burnout from a very long and challenging divorce process, post-trauma therapy, and off the heels of a series of moves. I’d hired her to work on landing a job (again) in tech, and NOT to invest again in my own business, because I was too emotionally overwhelmed and panicked to think clearly about what I wanted and what was in the way. After a few months, we ended up working together on my business relaunch, and here we are. My thinking was unsustainable. How I was taking care of myself was unsustainable. We’re still working together now several months later, and I’m proud at how far we, and I have come.
There is Relief, and You Can Get It
I wish I could tell you that the stress will stop, that “things will eventually calm down”, or that the feelings of anxiousness, sadness - or whatever you’re experiencing will go away, but they won’t. One of the biggest misconceptions is that coaching (and therapy for that matter) helps stop negative thoughts or emotions. Life isn’t going to stop throwing obstacles at us, as much as it won’t stop presenting us with excitement, joy, or a range of feelings attached to them. What I can absolutely promise is that there IS relief. You CAN manage the ups and downs better. There are so many tangible tools that help you far better manage whatever life throws at you. You can change and can feel better in spite of what’s coming your way, and you will with consistency and practice. Those uncomfortable feelings will become more manageable, and less intense. You’ll be able to challenge those unhelpful thoughts, and you’ll be much more resilient as well.
